LONDON, ENGLAND - OPERATION LEVIATHAN - A RACE AGAINST TIME

John Storm watched the scientists leave, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips. "Operation Nightingale," he muttered, "a fitting codename." He turned to Hal. "Any luck on their end?"

"Negative," Hal replied, his voice a calm baritone. "Their attempts to intercept the data transfer have been thwarted. However, their interest has been piqued. I detected a surge in activity from a CIA server, likely monitoring our network."

John raised an eyebrow. "The CIA? Interesting. Our two Swiss scientists might have a point. Seems like we have a race on our hands."

He leaned back in his chair, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Hal, run a background check on Baron Richthofen. Must be of German descent with that name. I want to know everything – his connections, his finances, his… ambitions. And Mr Francisco was Italiano."

Hal began to process the request, a cascade of data flowing across the holographic display. "Analyzing… connections to Swiss, German groups confirmed. Suspected ties to black market drug warlords in Brazil. Significant investments in… genetic engineering research. $Billions, most of it from banks in South America. Untraceable."

John whistled softly. "More than just a philanthropic history buff then? A true believer. This is going to be more interesting than I could have imagined."

He turned his gaze back to the holographic image of Hal, then the Ark, a determined glint in his eyes. "Time to play their game, Hal. How are our firewalls?"

"Just about unbeatable, the Ark is for sure."

"Okay then my artificially intelligent chum, let's see who comes out on top."

Unfortunately for John, he did not know about the CyberCore Genetica. Fortunately, the Baron's team were mostly engaged on other tasks, leaving a skeleton crew in Manaus.

TAPOSIRIS MAGNA, EGYPTIAN NORTH COAST

Back in the Baron's private quarters in Egypt, the atmosphere was tense.

"Damn it!" Klaus exclaimed, his face flushed. "We almost had him. All bar his ecological morals."

Franco remained calm, his eyes fixed on the display connected to the CyberCore Genetica remotely. "He's playing a dangerous game, Klaus. But we have an advantage."

The Baron, his face a mask of fury, paced the room.

"That damned Storm… he thinks he can outmaneuver me? He will regret this." He turned to Franco, his eyes gleaming with a dangerous light. "We need a contingency plan. If we cannot acquire the Ark by agreement, we must find another way. Have you considered… the Elizabeth Swann?"

Franco raised an eyebrow. "John Storm's deep-sea research vessel? You believe we might take control?"

"It's worth a try," the Baron replied, his voice low and menacing. "And if we can't steal Storm's data, we can acquire some of our own from Interpol. Scotland Yard is their weak link; they are corrupt to the core, the belief of their ability to cover up national scandals is their ultimate Achilles' heel."

He turned to Klaus. "Initiate Operation 'Leviathan'. We'll track down the Elizabeth Swann, trace her passage. Swarm her the next time the hydrogen vessel docks, or somewhere conveniently at sea, and obtain their research data. And eliminate any obstacles in our path."

Klaus nodded, a chilling smile spreading across his face. "It is necessary I agree, Baron."

"Without shedding blood?" offered Franco. "We need John Storm alive."

"If we can, sometimes the boys get a little enthusiastic. Herr Storm is an asset to our cause," agreed Klaus. "We can return his ship to him, once we've copied his data, ..."

"... And reverse engineered his digital to biological re-conversion technology," Franco completed the sentence.

"Ya, but das is just a rumor mein freund. Giving the conservationist back his beloved solar ship will assure him we are genuine as to our long-term objectives."

The room fell silent, the only sound the humming of wall mounted computer screens. The race had begun many years ago, now shifted into top-gear, a high-stakes game of espionage and intrigue, where the rewards were nothing less than the future of humanity. They needed to prevent their technology falling into the wrong hands. In this quest, allies of pure intention were hard to come by.
