VIA MOLISE, ROME  - THE ITALIAN PATENT OFFICE

“Good morning Seńor Francisco,” said a deep gruff voice. ………………. “It’s the patent office. We’ve noticed your patent is not complete with diagrams, etc. Have you a working model for the judge?”

“I’ve put in as much detail as is necessary so that any capable engineer can build the device. Is that not so?” Franco said defensively. He could almost hear the man on the other end of the phone thinking.

“Is that as far as you want to go,” said the voice.

Franco thought about this for a while. “That depends. What are you suggesting?”

“Have you everything you need,” said the voice, “or would help speed things along?”

“What kind of help?” 

"Why don’t you meet me? Are you busy at the moment?” 

Franco had been at the Giacomo Hospital along the Via Del Corso for about two hours. Then it dawned on him that he’d been contacted at work. How did they know where to find him? Then before he could think to question his caller.

“How about lunch in an hour, the Piazza della Liberta just across the Margherita crossing? There’s a nice restaurant I know”

“I know it,” said Franco. “The Branziarro. How will I know you?”

“I’m wearing a white hat.” 

It had rained in the early hours but was now fresh and dry after the Mediterranean sun had been at work since sunrise. Franco decided to taxi the kilometre to stay fresh. The Branziarro was popular due to the combination of superb Italian cuisine and speedy service. Large as life his caller was sitting at a corner table wearing his off-white hat matching a cream suit. A black silver banded walking stick rested against the table. He had grey hair and mottled complexion. Franco guessed he was around sixty.

The man stood up and lifted his hat. “Roberto Ferrara at your service.” Franco shook his outstretched hand and they sat down.

Immediately a waiter appeared. “We might as well enjoy ourselves,” said Ferrara looking at Franco. “Two house specials and a martini?”

Franco nodded pleased with the choice. “And a Cola for me, do you have the one with cane sugar?”

“Naturally,” said the waiter setting out fresh cutlery.

BRAIN CONDITIONING - You can imagine the excitement in the laboratory as Franco Francisco and Klaus von Kolreuter realise their dream of digitally recreating the most famous woman in history. Using clever synaptic sequencing algorithms and selected memory implants, they work through several nights to make sure that the replicated Cleopatra, knows about her past, but is also as prepared as possible to function in a modern world.

Ferrara smiled at Francisco. “I’ll come straight to the point. We’d like to help kickstart your project and you don’t have the time it deserves, do you?”

That was true, but Franco needed to work to pay his bills.

Ferrara continued. “You’ll need funding and space for experiment. Am I right?” 

Franco just nodded, his host was saying all the right things – no need to interrupt him. “The question is, if we bankrolled the project would you give up the hospital?”

“I’d need complete freedom and control.” Franco finally broke silence, knowing he was onto a good thing."

"Naturally. And now, and sorry to be so direct, but assuming you have no ties in Italy ..."

Francisco looked uncomfortable.

"Apologies, but if I am right, the other important question is..." Ferrara hesitated.

"Go ahead ask," said Franco, thinking he may as well get it over with, whatever it was.

"Well, er, okay then here it is. Would you mind relocating to a laboratory overseas?"

Franco mulled this one over, with a furrowed brow.

A waiter came over balancing two House Specials. "Spaghetti alla bolognese." The portly, middle aged restaurateur, deftly laid one plate in front of Ferrara. "Signore." 

"Grazie."

"Prego," said the waiter, as he smoothly changed position to serve the still ponderous scientist. "Signore." 

"Molto apprezzato," Franco offered on autopilot.

"Sei più che benvenuto, signore". The waiter set a parmesan cheese grinder down, and bowed out. "Buon appetito." 

Both customers looked at their impressive portions. And for that the waiter departed, satisfaction written all over his face.

"I'd have my own laboratory?"

"Signore Francisco, you'd have all the facilities you need. No expense spared. I can assure you. You'd have air conditioned apartments and house servants. All with the highest levels of security."

Franco nodded thoughtfully.

"You'd be working with other experts in their field, should you need anything developed outside of your specialization."

Franco lifted his glass of cola, Ferrara lifted his water glass. They chinked.

"Okay" said Franco, "One other thing. Where am I going?"

"A tropical paradise in Brazil, replied Ferrara"

That brought forward a huge sigh of appreciation from Franco Francisco, much to the relief of Roberto Ferrara.

"And just one other thing. You must withdraw your patent application."

"Why is that?" asked Franco.

"I think you know. The medical and pharmaceutical companies will steal your ideas and suffocate you legally. Why give them any clues, when you are way out in front?"

"I had given that aspect some serious thought." ......... After another considerable silence, Franco spoke: "Agreed."

The two men shook hands across their table.

And so Franco's research took on a whole new turn of speed, ethics and morals aside.

MORAL DILEMMA

As he worked tirelessly on his inventions, Franco often pondered the nature of life and death. Was it right or wrong to meddle with mother nature. It troubled him. It worried him so, that he thought about calling a halt. Though his life style in Brazil was lavish to say the least. Everything he wanted. Equipment he never could have dreamed of. Servants and security, and work colleagues that understood him. Even so, they were artificially creating life. His thoughts strayed so, that he was even thinking of cloning his son. But he chastised himself for the fancy. He knew Isabella would not approve of that.

One night, as Franco drifted off to sleep, he had a dream unlike any other. He found himself standing in a grand, ancient hall, its walls adorned with hieroglyphics. Before him stood Anubis, the enigmatic god of the underworld.

"Your work, Franco, is a testament to human ingenuity," Anubis said, his voice deep and resonant. "You are on the cusp of a great discovery, a discovery that could change the course of history."

Franco was stunned. He had never expected to encounter a divine being, let alone one from the ancient Egyptian pantheon. This dream felt so real.

"Your work aligns with the cosmic order," Anubis continued. "It is a step towards a future where the boundaries between life and death may blur."

Franco questioned his meddling with the natural order of things, power over life and death.

Anubis knowing the ethics sometimes bothered Franco, responded, "you are on the cusp of a great discovery, a discovery that could reshape the future of humanity."

Days later, Franco had another dream, this time featuring the goddess Isis. Her ethereal beauty and compassionate gaze filled him with a sense of peace and purpose. She relaxed him. Soothing his moral peaks and furrows.

"Your endeavors, Franco, are noble," she said. "You are a pioneer, a visionary. May your work bring hope and healing to the world and give meaning to your great loss."

These dreams, though surreal, ignited a fire within Franco. He realized that his invention was not merely a technological marvel but a tool that could be used to explore the very nature of existence. With renewed vigor, he returned to his work, driven by a divine purpose.

The divine approval he had received in his dreams strengthened his resolve to continue his groundbreaking research. He was determined to use his invention to not only extend human life but also to explore the very nature of existence itself.

Franco dedicated himself to his scientific pursuits. He poured his heart and soul into his research, driven by a desire to alleviate suffering and honor the memory of his lost family. Remembering the pain of his loss, a grief so strong he almost forfeit his own life.

IN THE UNDERWORLD

In the ethereal realm, Anubis and Isis watched over the mortal world with keen interest. They had observed the progress of human civilization, marveling at their ingenuity and their capacity for both creation and destruction.

"Isis," Anubis began, his voice a low rumble, "our plan is coming to fruition. Franco Francisco, the human inventor, is on the brink of a great discovery."

The goddess of life and death, smiled. 

"Indeed, Anubis. His work aligns with the ancient prophecies. He is a vessel for the future, a catalyst for change."

"And Cleopatra," Anubis continued, "her time is drawing near. The technology is advancing, and the path to her rebirth is opening."

Isis nodded in agreement. "We have guided her spirit, nurtured her hope. Now, it is time for her to return, a phoenix rising from the ashes."

The two deities exchanged knowing glances. Their divine partnership, forged in the ancient past, was now playing a crucial role in shaping the future of humanity. They had watched over Cleopatra, guided her soul, and now, they were facilitating her rebirth in a new form, a digital consciousness.

As they observed the human world, they felt a sense of satisfaction. Their divine intervention, their encouragement of human innovation, was bearing fruit. A new era was dawning, an era where the boundaries between life and death were blurring, and the possibilities were endless.
