INCUBUS CLONING TECHNOLOGY - 470 N, 130 E - FLASHBACK, ROME

It was his life’s work and what dedication it had taken. Unlike many other scientists Franco Francisco’s dream had taken eighteen years before yielding any definite proof of success. The vision had been to create a machine to alleviate the dangers inherent in pregnancy and childbirth. He’d figured if reptiles and birds had evolved a unique way of multiplying embryo development outside the womb, then man could do the same. The egg we all take for granted is a miracle of biological engineering, and even then it needs external warmth. Could he improve on it?

Franco’s wife Isabella had died giving birth to their son twenty-two years ago. It had taken him two years to recover from the tragedy; to pick himself up again and look for a reason to carry on. The irony of it all was that he’d been a paramedic, but he was 5 miles away on the other side of the city on an emergency call when his wife went into labour, in a busy hospital in Rome.

There was no hint of anything wrong, but as happens occasionally, there were complications. 

His son Daniel survived for eighteen months, but was crippled, adding to the widower’s grief. Daniel had died painlessly in his sleep, mercifully put to rest, after which Franco resigned his paramedic job, by way of a sabbatical, during which he didn’t do very much except take long walks to the graveyard and back, by way of a drugstore. Eventually the fog of depression lifted, he stopped weeping at nights. He began to notice normal everyday things again and could eat without feeling ill. He stopped drinking spirits and started appreciating a good vintage wine.

The loss of his beloved wife and child had plunged Franco into a deep, despairing abyss. He had contemplated suicide, a final escape from the pain. But a divine intervention would change the course of his life.

Isis, the goddess of life, appeared to him in dreams, urging him to persevere. "Your work is essential," she whispered. "Your research has the power to heal and transform."

Isis, reached out to Franco in his darkest hour. She appeared before Franco, her radiant figure offering comfort and hope. "Your life has purpose, Franco," she said. "Your research, your inventions, can change the world."

Your life, Franco, is precious," she said. "Your work, your research, it holds the key to a brighter future."

Anubis, the god of death, also appeared to him, his message equally profound. "Your son's memory demands that you continue," he said. "Your legacy will honor his suffering."

Anubis, the god of death, also visited Franco, offering words of solace and purpose. "Your son's memory will live on through your achievements," he promised. "Do not give up hope."

His work, though initially dismissed by the scientific community, would eventually generate a part in the genetic jigsaw puzzle to revolutionize the field of medicine.

The divine intervention had not only saved Franco's life but also inspired him to a higher purpose. His journey, marked by tragedy and triumph, would leave an enduring legacy.

With renewed determination, Franco dedicated himself to his scientific pursuits. He poured his heart and soul into his research, driven by a desire to alleviate suffering and honor the memory of his lost family. His work, though initially dismissed by the scientific community, would eventually revolutionize the field of medicine.

THE WASHING MACHINE CYCLE

Franco had always been fascinated with gadgets. He took apart his washing machine one day to see if he could repair it. Inside he was amazed to find very little. The heart of the machine was a mechanical timer comprising a small bank of rotary switches powered by a small electric motor. These switches turned on and off the main drum motor and reversed it as well. There was a water pump to remove dirty water and solenoid operated valves to allow fresh hot and cold water in. Even this everyday kitchen appliance took years to develop. His next washing machine was microprocessor controlled with much more sophisticated sensors. Yet this device had freed women up from a labour and time intensive task, to replace that with a measure of washing powder and the twist of a selector.

Reflecting on his wife’s complications one day, while watching his washing machine churning away, Franco thought it would be wonderful if women could be freed up from carrying their child for nine months, avoiding complications and pain into the bargain. An amateur inventor, Franco soon realised that he could build an incubator for human eggs. He would need to incorporate some sophisticated controls and develop a synthetic amniotic fluid, oxygenate blood in the placenta and feed nutrients through the blood to the placenta. The artificial womb would need heating and careful temperature controls. 

The brilliant inventor, was on the brink of a breakthrough and he knew it. Inspired by the intricate workings of this common household appliance, he envisioned a device that could revolutionize reproductive medicine. By mimicking the cyclical programming of a washing machine, he believed he could create a machine capable of nurturing life.

Yet, as he delved deeper into his research, a sense of doubt began to creep in. The ethical implications of his invention were profound. Would it be exploited for nefarious purposes? Would it undermine the sanctity of life?

The weight of these questions was almost unbearable. Franco considered abandoning his project many times when contemplating adverse ridicule, fearing the potential consequences. But then, in the quiet hours one night as he dozed in front of a radiant fire, a divine intervention occurred.

Isis, the goddess of life, appeared to him in a dream. She was worried for Franco, as he approached the point of no return. He must not give up.

Her radiant form filled the room, her voice soothing and reassuring. "Your work is noble, Franco," she said. "You have the power to alleviate suffering and bring joy to countless couples."

Isis reminded him of the countless women who yearned for children but were unable to conceive. She spoke of the potential to cure infertility, to heal the wounds of those who had lost their children.

"You are not creating life, Franco," she explained. "You are merely facilitating it. Your invention is a tool, a gift to humanity."

"Will this not lead to a dystopian future where human life was manufactured on an industrial scale?"

The feminist movement was gaining momentum, and Franco feared that his invention could be seen as a threat to women's autonomy. He envisioned protests, boycotts, and public outrage. The weight of these concerns almost crushed his spirit.

"Your work," Isis assured him, "can alleviate suffering, not exacerbate it. It can be a tool for healing, not destruction."

"Those were my thoughts exactly," said Franco.

Isis reminded him of the countless women who had been marginalized and oppressed throughout history. His invention, she argued, could empower women, giving them greater control over their reproductive choices.

"Surely, this work touches on the abortion and reproductive rights debate. The development of artificial uteri and ectogenesis raises more than a few bioethical and legal considerations, and important implications."

"Yes indeed Franco." Isis reminded Franco of the power of choice.

"Women will decide how to use this technology. They will be the ultimate arbiters of its use. Why not go ahead and file a draft patent specification, it will test the water, inviting investigation by hundreds of specialist patent scientists all over the world."

"That's a brilliant idea. Why didn't I think of that."

Franco determined that it could and should be done. Inspired by his smooth talking dreamtime conscience, he filed a patent application, long before he’d put his theory into practice, or worked out all the details. In fact, he'd deliberately omitted some of his key discoveries, somewhat distrustful of the patent system and plagiarism from big business. He recalled the famous Robert Kearns rip off by the Ford motor company.

Franco filed what he discovered was a "priority" patent with the Italian Patent and Trademark Office: Ufficio Italiano Brevetti e Marchi, or UIBM, operated by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, based in Rome.

He received his application number, and waited for the observations of an Examiner. One very famous patent examiner was Albert Einstein. That fact made Franco chuckle to himself. He was dancing with wolves. He had twelve months in which to file an international patent. But where would the money come from for that?

REPLICANT - The Society reproduce Cleopatra using Francisco's RepliVator™, uploading synapse sequence and implanted memories.

BRAIN CONDITIONING - Klaus and Franco upload digitally recreated memories in historical order to trigger correct learned synapse firing sequence

REBORN - The former Queen of Egypt speaks for the first time to her creators, proving that her brain is working, the implants succeeded.
