CLEOPATRA'S - SARCOPHAGUS IS OPENED

In Hollywood movies, Cleopatra has been played by an array of stunning actresses, all with perfectly cosmetic teeth, probably as part of their acting contracts. Elizabeth Taylor, who was put under the “gaze” as the “Queen of the Nile” in the best-known film version of the ruler’s story to date, Cleopatra (1963), is a mainstay on short lists of moviedom’s most attractive leading ladies. One of cinema’s first sex symbols, Theda Bara, invested her Cleopatra with dark sensuality in the lost silent classic Cleopatra (1917). Before the Production Code reined in sexual suggestiveness, a scantily clad Claudette Colbert caused a sensation in Cecil B. DeMille’s epic Cleopatra (1934), and Vivian Leigh was the beguiling queen in Caesar and Cleopatra (1945). In 2023, Gal Gadot was said to be limbering up to play the part. As is Zendaya, with Denis Villeneuve advertised to direct a revisited biopic in 2025, thought to be part funded by Sony pictures.

TAPOSIRIS MAGNA, EGYPT - BREAKING THE SEAL

In the heart of Egypt, a team of dedicated scientists, led by the brilliant Klaus Kolreuter and the esteemed archaeologist Rudolph Kessler, gathered around a relic of the past. Before them lay Cleopatra's sarcophagus, a testament to the enduring power of ancient Egypt. The artifact, just recovered from the depths of the Mediterranean was still damp in places as a wash with fresh water evaporated. The workmanship was exquisite, a marvel of ancient engineering. Its intricate carvings and hieroglyphs told stories of a bygone era.

"Masks on please," said Klaus insistently.

Everyone put on a very high specification surgical mask.

Then, with meticulous care, they began the delicate process of opening the sarcophagus. A hush fell over the room. Safiya and Musa stayed clear, but close enough to pass tools and surgical instruments.

With a sense of reverence, they began the delicate process of lifting the lid of the sarcophagus. As the heavy cover moved, a cloud of ancient air escaped bearing the faint odour of ethanol, carrying with it the whispers of the past. Thus confirming the inner chamber was watertight. Inside, the mummy of Cleopatra lay in a bath of preserving fluids, undisturbed, a testament to the skill of ancient Egyptian embalmers.

Shining a torch through a widening gap, they could see Cleopatra lying, preserved almost perfectly. The bandages of her mummy, though darkened by time and soaked through, were still supple to the touch.

On opening the specially treated wooden casket, it was not just her mortal form that captivated the scientists.

Klaus exclaimed through his face mask, "incredible, after two thousand years."

Rudolph, the archaeologist, nodded in agreement. "A true marvel of ancient technology."

The lid was finally lifted off entirely, to reveal Cleopatra's face covered by a golden death mask, an adornment the equal of Tutankhamun's stunning headpiece. The coffin was not lined in lead, but inert 24 carat gold. Gold in its purest form.

No wonder the casket was so heavy, thought Kessler.

Upon her head rested a magnificent golden crown, adorned with precious stones and intricate hieroglyphs. Her death mask was crafted from pure gold and painted with the vibrant blue pigment synonymous with the ancient Egyptian culture. It was a stunning metal portrait of the queen, her striking features sculpted in yellow; her beauty preserved for eternity.

"Is the mask a true representation facially?" ventured Musa Bomani.

"Likely as not, warts removed for posterity no doubt," answered Kessler.

As the team carefully began the process of prying off the Queen's finery, a sense of awe and reverence filled the room. They knew that they were witness to history unfolding before their eyes.

Unbeknownst to the archaeologists, two divine beings watched over their every move. Isis, the goddess of life, and Anubis, the god of death, were keenly interested in the outcome of this endeavor.

In the ethereal realm the spirits watched mesmerized and transfixed. They had guided all concerned to the discovery of the sarcophagus, ensuring that it would be finally recovered and treated with respect. The find eluding would be looters and treasure hunters all.

"The time has come," Isis whispered excitedly to Anubis. "The Queen of the Nile will soon be awakened."

Anubis nodded, his eyes filled with anticipation. "Let us pray they do her justice."

The scientists worked with meticulous care, each step calculated and precise. As the death mask was lifted, a collective gasp rippled through the room. It was heavier than expected.

Isis, with her compassionate gaze, prayed that the process would be carried out with the utmost care. She feared that a careless mistake could irrevocably damage the remains of the great queen. Anubis, ever vigilant, watched for any signs of danger, ready to intervene if necessary.

Isis smiled, a sense of satisfaction washing over her as the death mask lifted to reveal her beloved Cleopatra. The queen had been preserved, her spirit intact.

Safiya Sabuka, a descendant of Cleopatra's lineage, was overwhelmed by emotion. As she gazed upon the queen's likeness, she felt a deep connection to her ancestor. The woman who had defied empires, captivated hearts, and left an indelible mark on history. She recognized the likeness, the same strong jawline, the same serene eyes. She felt as if she was looking at her mother in a mirror.

Seeing her ancestor in such a state of preservation was almost too much to bear. Tears welled up in her eyes as she gazed upon the serene face, a face that had once commanded the respect of emperors. Her thoughts drifted to ancient times, to the Pharaoh's suicide. The ultimate act of defiance.

Attentive as always, Musa saw Safiya sway a little, and moved to steady her, holding her shoulder supportively. He proffered a white handkerchief.

"Thank you Musa."

She felt weak at the knees, almost near collapse. She grasped Musa's arm tightly, and breathed deep. Soon recovering her composure. Klaus and Rudolph oblivious to the uncharacteristic display of emotions behind them, save for an unsteady footstep.

The scientists, awestruck by the discovery, began the delicate process of removing the mummy from the sarcophagus. As they worked, they couldn't help but marvel at the craftsmanship of the ancient Egyptians. The preservation techniques were astonishing, and the artistry was simply breathtaking.

With scrupulous care, they gently raised the golden treasure off and away, handing it to Safiya to deposit on a table covered in irradiated linen. The scientists then began to remove the layers of bandages that enveloped Cleopatra's mummy, only around her head. Each layer peeled away, revealing more of the queen's timeless beauty, now just a dehydrated memory. Finally, they reached her jaw, a delicate operation that required the utmost care.

As they gently lifted the bandages from her face, a collective gasp escaped their lips. The features of the legendary queen were still discernible, her beauty frozen in time. Her teeth, were in perfect condition, a full set of enameled ivories, glistened in the artificial light; pearly whites.

Klaus, ever the scientist, took a small drill and extracted a sample of her DNA from one of her teeth. Putting the dentine particles in a clear nylon vial, then sealed it shut.

In the spirit world, Cleopatra watched on as the scientists examined her remains, a bittersweet feeling washing over her.

"Careful," she thought to herself.

Klaus, a pioneer in genetic engineering, approached the two thousand year old mummy with a mixture of awe and scientific curiosity. He carefully examined her features, noting the remarkable state of preservation.

"She is almost perfectly preserved," he murmured, his voice filled with wonder.

Anubis, the guardian of the underworld, watched the scene with a mixture of curiosity and reverence. He had guided the discovery of the sarcophagus, ensuring that Cleopatra's spirit would have the best chance to return. He much admired the surgical skill of this team.

"She is ready," Anubis whispered to himself. "The time is drawing near."

Meanwhile, in the ethereal realm, Cleopatra's spirit shuddered. She felt a connection to her physical form not experienced in an age, a sense of anticipation. She could hear the soft murmur of the scientists as they examined her remains.

The procedure was delicate, requiring exactness and concentration. The scientists worked diligently, knowing that they were handling probably the most important personage in ancient Egyptian history. With each passing moment, they drew closer to unlocking the secrets of the past.

"Safiya, Musa, please could you very carefully replace the Queen's death mask, and coffin lid." Said Klaus von Kolreuter.

"Ya." Enjoined Rudolf Kessler. "She must be hidden again, preserved again, and returned to Egypt once we know she will be safe. There have been a lot of thefts from Museums all over the world."

Safiya had made the arrangements well in advance. Her remains would be securely stored pending entrustment to the Egyptian ministry of antiquities.

A MAKESHIFT LABORATORY AT TAPOSIRIS MAGNA - CLEOPATRA'S GENOME

As the scientists began the process to extract DNA from the sample of Cleopatra's teeth, the queen's spirit grew stronger in the afterlife. She felt a tingling surge of energy, a spark of life igniting within her. The Nile Queen had always paid particular attention to her oral hygiene where she could, saving any teeth she'd lost, for re-insertion after her death.

Klaus ground a small pinch of tooth to powder.

He explained to Safiya "Teeth are particularly good sources of ancient DNA due to their hard, mineralized structure, which protects genetic material from degradation."

Rudolph continued, "This process breaks down the hard enamel and dentine, exposing the pulp, which is rich in DNA."

Now Panama tuned in. As a clone he was interested to understand how he came to be.

They watched on in the makeshift laboratory.

"We should get back to our base camp in Brazil as soon as possible Klaus."

"Ya, as soon as ve haf der DNA isolated Rudolf."

Klaus treated the powdered tooth with chemicals to dissolve the calcium phosphate mineral, using a combination of proteinase K and chemical solutions of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, commonly called EDTA, to dissolve the organic components of the tooth. Then he used enzymes to digest the proteins and release the DNA.

"It all looks very complicated Herr Kolreuter?"

"Well yes, Safiya, it is, and it is not. To the man in the street, it's way beyond their comprehension. In the laboratory, with the right equipment and know-how, it is fairly straight forward."

"Though," jumped in Rudoph Kessler, "it is time consuming. Unt, vee haf to be precise."

"Ah, so vee now haf der DNA. Time for separation. Here vee need to get rid of der cellular components. Vee use phenol-chloroform extraction, unt spin column purification to remove contaminants, such as proteins and lipids to isolate the DNA."

Safiya and Panama were transfixed. It seemed like witchcraft. It was gobbledygook to them, but clearly the two scientists were on top of their art.

"Please stand a little further back Panama. You too Miss Sabuka," said Klaus.

"Ve haf a small quantity of DNA that needs to be amplified. Or there won't be enough of a sample for analysis."

"Ya," continued Rudolf, "ve use a polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, to amplify our sample. This involves a series of cycles that replicate the DNA. Sequences are targeted and copied millions of times, making them detectable and analyzable."

"The amplified DNA is sequenced to determine its genetic code." Klaus continued, "the DNA sequence is analyzed to identify genetic markers, such as mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or nuclear DNA, which can provide information about the individual's ancestry, health, and other characteristics."

At this point Musa chimed in, "by analyzing the DNA extracted from ancient teeth, scientists can learn about the genetic makeup of past populations, track human migration patterns, and even reconstruct the appearance of ancient individuals."

Safiya jumped in, "DNA extraction from ancient samples, like these, from archaeological sites, requires careful handling and data logging using advanced laboratory techniques."

"Unt der most prolific collector is Herr Storm. Is that correct Klaus?"

"It seems so," said Klaus, only half into the conversation.

Klaus Kolreuter, his eyes wide with excitement, examined the DNA sequence on the computer screen. The genetic code of Cleopatra, the legendary Queen of Egypt, was laid bare before him. Every gene, every chromosome, was intact, a testament to the skill of ancient embalmers and the power of modern extraction science.

"It's perfect," he exclaimed, his voice filled with wonder. "A complete genome. We can do this. We can bring her back."

His colleague, Rudolph Kessler, nodded in agreement. "This is a historic moment, Klaus. We're on the cusp of something extraordinary. That's two fingers to John Storm. One DNA sample that eluded that obsessive collector."

They all laughed.

With the Pharaoh Queen's DNA in hand, the future seemed limitless. The dream of bringing Cleopatra back to life was no longer just a fantasy; it was a tangible possibility. As the scientists prepared for the next stage, a sense of hope and anticipation filled the air. The world was on the brink of a new era, an era where the boundaries between life and death were blurring. "We have the blueprint for a goddess."

The news of their breakthrough quickly reached Heinrich Richthofen. When he heard the words "complete genome," a surge of excitement and anticipation coursed through him. He had been waiting for this moment for years, a moment that would forever change the course of history. That is if the replication processes would work as predicted.

"This is incredible!" the Baron exclaimed, his voice filled with emotion. "We are on the brink of a new era, an era where the past and the future collide." Tears of joy trickled down his cheeks.

Secretly, Richthofen envisioned a world where he would rule alongside Cleopatra, a divine couple, immortal and all-powerful. The thought filled him with a sense of euphoria. He was closer than ever to realizing his dream, cautious as to the spell the former Queen of the Nile has cast on his predecessors.

A LABORATORY NEAR MANAUS, THE AMAZON RIVER - THE CHURCH & CHARLES DARWIN

Klaus and Rudolph sat in their laboratory, the hum of machines filling the air. They had achieved the impossible, unlocking the secrets of human genetics. Yet, as they delved deeper into their research, they began to grapple with the ethical implications of their work.

"We must be cautious, Rudolph," Klaus warned. "The world is not ready for such radical ideas."

Rudolph nodded in agreement. "Throughout history, scientific progress has often clashed with religious beliefs. We cannot ignore the potential backlash."

"Perhaps we can frame our research as a continuation of Darwin's work," Klaus suggested. "We could argue that we are simply accelerating the natural process of evolution, taking it to the next level."

Rudolph pondered the idea. "It's a risky strategy. The Church has always been wary of scientific innovation. They might see us as a threat to their authority. Heretics."

"We must tread carefully," Klaus reiterated. "We need to present our findings in a way that is both compelling and respectful of religious beliefs. We could emphasize the potential benefits of our research, such as curing genetic diseases and extending human lifespan."

"And we must be prepared to defend our work against criticism," Rudolph added. "We may face opposition from various groups, but we must remain steadfast in our pursuit of knowledge."

The two scientists knew that they were treading on dangerous ground. But they were also driven by a sense of purpose, a belief that their work could change the world for the better. They would need to navigate the complex landscape of science, religion, and ethics, and they would need to do it with wisdom and foresight.

The Churches at various times sought to eradicate heretics like witches, alchemists and the illuminati. Cloning was illegal in many countries, giving their government the legal tools they needed to arrest and incarcerate the most daring in the scientific community. And then to bury their work, or use it for their own Cold War ambitions.
