A story as old as time, Cleopatra is returned to life, after her tragic departure.

クレオパトラの自殺の誓いの後、エジプトのファラオ女王は何百年も発見されずにいた。彼女は賢く、ローマと略奪者から身を守るために、自分の石棺とマルクス・アントニウスの石棺を秘密の墓に移すよう命じた。そして、彼女のミイラはそこに残され、時の霧の中に消えた。

地殻は常に動いており、多くの人が統計を知っていれば、地殻変動の荒野に立ち向かうことを恐れて屋内にとどまるだろう。幸い、考えないことは害にはならない。科学的無知は至福である。そして人生は続く。

地震活動のほとんどは、太平洋の端または大西洋の真ん中にあるいくつかの明確な地震帯に集中している。

大西洋中央海嶺のほとんどは海底深くにあり、人間の開発からは遠いが、アイスランドは大西洋中央海嶺の真上にあるため、チャールズ F. リヒター スケールでマグニチュード 6 の地震を経験している。

リヒター マグニチュード スケールは、ローカル マグニチュード (M) スケールとも呼ばれ、10 の対数スケールに基づいて、地震によって放出される地震エネルギーの量を数値で表す。

地震によって生じる振動は、地震計と呼ばれる機器によって検出、記録、測定されます。これらの機器は、機器の下の地面の動きを 100 万倍以上に増幅し、その振動活動を、よく知られているジグザグのトレースとしてロール紙に書き写します。これを地震記録と呼びます。

大地震の 80% 以上は、太平洋の縁、いわゆる「環太平洋火山帯」で発生します。ここは、太平洋プレートが周囲のプレートの下に沈み込んでいる場所で、これは継続的なプロセスです。環太平洋火山帯は、世界で最も地震と火山活動が活発な地域です。

地中海では、地震の数と強度の両方で最も被害を受けている海岸はギリシャとイタリアです。したがって、クレオパトラは、直接経験していなくても、これらの津波について知っていたはずです。紀元前 1600 年から現在までに、地中海では少なくとも 290 回の津波が発生しており、そのうちのいくつかは非常に破壊的なものでした。

沿岸部でこれほど多くの犠牲者が出ているのに、なぜ地中海沿岸に人々が集まるのか不思議に思う人もいるかもしれません。

1956 年、エーゲ海のアモルゴス島沖でマグニチュード 7.5 の強い地震が発生し、アモルゴス島では 25 メートル、アスティパレア島では 20 メートルに達する津波が発生し、エーゲ海中南部のすべての島に大きな影響が及びました。この津波はクレタ島にも到達し、約 2 メートルの波が起こりました。

最近では、2003 年 5 月にアルジェリア海岸 (ブメルデス) の前方で発生した強い地震により津波が発生し、近隣の海岸には被害はありませんでしたが、フランスとリグリアの海岸まで広がりました。最も大きな被害はバレアレス諸島で記録され、波が多くの漁船や遊覧船に大きな被害をもたらし、マヨルカ島とイビサ島では洪水が発生しました。近年、地中海ではマグニチュード6.5～7の地震が数回発生し、小規模な津波が発生しています。最も悪質な津波は2017年にコス島（ギリシャ）とボドルム（トルコ）付近で発生し、海面が到達した地形の高さはほぼメートルと記録されました。

2020年10月30日、ギリシャのサモス島北部で発生したマグニチュード7の地震により津波が発生し、ドデカネス諸島とトルコを襲い、特にイズミル（イズミル）県に影響を及ぼした。津波の遡上高は1.5メートルを超え、局地的には高さ2メートル近くのピークが記録された。イズミル県では広範囲にわたる被害が記録され、海水の引きに続いて津波と水の急流が起こり、1人の犠牲者が出た。

つまり、現在では遅かれ早かれ起こる運命だったが、幸いなことに、水没した水の女王にとって、神々は優しい気分で、かなりの大渦を巻き起こした。クレオパトラは知っていたら感謝しただろう。リヒタースケールで5.5の地震により水中で大きな動きが起こり、津波と相まって、以前は砂と瓦礫の下にあった霊廟の内部から流された装飾品が姿を現した。パリのユネスコ海洋委員会の部長、ジャック・ダコー教授も、イギリスのブルーシールドでロバータ・トレッドストーン博士と共同で作業していたことに気付いた。

この騒動の間中、クレオパトラのミイラは、防腐剤、油、スパイス、ハーブが入った包帯でしっかりと包まれた繭の中に留まり、1600歳の人間としては期待できるほど新鮮な状態を保っていた。すべては、後ろからしっかりと締められた補強素材の外側のカバーで包まれていた。幸い、十分に密閉されていたが、油と樹脂の保護層にもかかわらず、海の酸性度が上昇し、素材が侵食され始めるという新たな危険にさらされていた。

For hundreds of years after Cleopatra's suicide pact, the Pharaoh Queen of Egypt, remained undiscovered. Cleverly, she ordered her sarcophagus and that of Marc Antony, to be relocated to a secret tomb, as protection from Rome and looters. And there her mummy remained, lost in the mists of time.

Cleopatra's tomb had been taken down in the striking of 365 AD. She had rested buried deep, undisturbed, under sand and sea for some sixteen hundred years, newly threatened by anthropogenic warming of the planet, and increasingly acidic seas, disturbing her peaceful inertness. 

On dry land teams of archaeologists searched in vain for Cleopatra's tomb. Scouring Taposiris Magna, a spoonful of dust at a time.

It was time for the Gods to smile once more on the last Pharaoh queen. To reward her patient suffering, a revered Goddess in much need of recovery.

The earth's crust is constantly moving, so much so if many people had knowledge of the statistics, they would stay indoors afraid to brave the tectonic wilds. Fortunately, what you don't think on can do you no harm - scientific ignorance being bliss - and so life goes on.

Most seismic activity is concentrated in a number of distinct earthquake belts, typically the edge of the Pacific Ocean, or in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. 

Most of the mid-Atlantic Ridge is deep underwater and far from human development, but Iceland, sits directly over the mid-Atlantic Ridge so has experienced earthquakes of a magnitude of six on the Charles F. Richter Scale.

The Richter magnitude scale, also known as the local magnitude (M) scale, assigns a number to quantify the amount of seismic energy released by an earthquake, based on a 10 logarithmic scale.

Vibrations produced by earthquakes are detected, recorded, and measured by instruments called seismographs. These devices may amplify ground motions beneath the instruments over one million times, transcribing the vibration activity into the well known zig-zag trace on a roll of paper; called a seismo-gram.

Over 80 per cent of large earthquakes occur around the edges of the Pacific Ocean, an area known as the 'Ring of Fire.' This is where the Pacific plate is being subducted beneath the surrounding plates - a continuous process. The Ring of Fire is the most seismically and volcanically active zone in the world.

In the Mediterranean, the most affected coasts, both for number of events and for intensity, are those of Greece and Italy, thus Cleopatra would have known of them, if not experienced them personally. From 1600 BC to the present day at least 290 tsunamis have occurred in the Mediterranean, some of them quite destructive.

The most significant events have occurred in Greece. Around 1600 BC, with the explosion of the volcano Santorini, in the Aegean Sea, the collapse of the caldera caused a devastating tsunami, with waves about 50 metres high, which spread throughout much of the eastern Mediterranean, affecting Turkey, Syria, Egypt and Palestine which were devastated by the waves. According to some experts, this tsunami could have been the cause of the sudden end of the Minoan civilization in Crete. The Gods were not pleased on that occasion.

Subsequently, in 365 AD, a strong earthquake off Crete, with an estimated magnitude of 8 - 8.5, caused a sharp rise of the coastal platform, which in some places exceeded 10 metres. This earthquake generated a great tsunami which caused thousands of deaths and serious damage throughout the Mediterranean, destroying the port and the famous library of Alexandria in Egypt, and inflicting serious damage to the ports of the Middle East and all the way up the Adriatic Sea. In 1303 another strong earthquake off Crete produced a violent tsunami which caused many victims and serious damage in Crete, with very intense phenomena in Israel and Egypt.

With so much coastal carnage, one might begin to wonder why populations congregate along the Mediterranean rim.

In 1956, a strong earthquake off the island of Amorgosin the Aegean Sea with a magnitude 7.5, generated a tsunami with waves reaching 25 metres in Amorgos and 20 in Astypalaea, causing strong impacts in all the islands of the central-southern Aegean sea. This tsunami also reached Crete, with waves of about 2 metres.

More recently, in May 2003, a strong earthquake in front of the Algerian coast (Boumerdes) generated a tsunami which did not produce damage in the nearby coasts but spread as far as the French and Liguria coasts. The most significant damage was recorded in the Balearic Islands, where the waves caused heavy damage to many fishing and pleasure boats and floods in Mallorca and Ibiza. In recent years, several earthquakes of magnitude between 6.5 and 7 have generated small tsunamis in the Mediterranean. The most insidious occurred in 2017 near the island of Kos (Greece) and Bodrum (Turkey) where the topographic height which the sea reached was recorded as almost meters.

On October 30, 2020 a 7-magnitude earthquake located north of Samos Island in Greece generated a tsunami that hit the Dodecanese islands and Turkey, particularly affecting Izmir (Izmir) province. The tsunami reached runups greater than 1.5 meters and, locally, peaks close to two meters in height were recorded. Widespread damages were recorded in Izmir province where the withdrawal of the sea followed by the tsunami and the rush of the waters claimed one victim.

So it is that in the present, it was bound to happen sooner or later, but fortunately for the submerged aquatic queen, the Gods were in a kindly mood, whipping up quite a maelstrom.  Cleopatra would have been grateful had she known. A tremor measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale caused significant underwater movement, combined with a tsunami to reveal ornaments washed from within a mausoleum that was previously under sand and debris. Not unnoticed by UNESCO's Ocean Commission division chief, Professor Jacques Daccord, in Paris, working alongside Dr Roberta Treadstone, at Blue Shield, England.

Trough all of this commotion, Cleopatra's mummy remained inside her tightly wrapped cocoon of bandages that contained the preserving, oils, spices and herbs, keeping her as fresh as could be expected for someone sixteen hundred years old. All wrapped in an outer covering of reinforced material tightly laced from behind. Fortunately, well enough sealed, but newly in danger from increasing acidity in the sea, that would begin to eat into material despite the protective layers of oils and resins.
